People In Music History
Kodaly, Zoltan (1882-1967) Hungarian composer. Collected and edited Hungarian
folk songs partly in collaboration with Bartok; developed a strongly national
idiom based on these songs, but less harsh and explosive than Bartok's.
Achieved a national status as composer, particularly with his Psalmus
Hungaricus and his opera Hary Janos. Other works include 2 other operas,
Concerto for Orchestra, symphony, Dances of Galanta, variations on Hungarian
folk song The Peacock, and other orchestral works; Dances of Marosszek for
piano (afterward orchestrated), Missa Brevis, and other choral works; chamber
music, songs, etc.
